About Scott Boyd
Freelance digital marketing consultant and founder of SGB Marketing
I’m Scott Boyd, an Edinburgh-based digital marketing consultant with search marketing experience dating back to 2002. I founded SGB Marketing Ltd in 2016 and help established organisations use SEO, Google Ads, content and AI search visibility to generate more valuable enquiries, bookings and sales.
I work directly with business owners and marketing teams, provide embedded or interim expertise, and support agencies through white-label partnerships. Most of my work is delivered remotely for clients across Scotland and the UK, with in-person meetings available for businesses in and around Edinburgh.
Search marketing experience since 2002
I completed a degree in Marketing and Information Management in 1999, before digital marketing had developed into the discipline it is today. After building several small websites by hand in my spare time, I joined a marketing agency in Spain in 2002 and was introduced to SEO.
Since then, I have worked across specialist search agencies, design and branding agencies, freelance consultancy and in-house marketing roles. My experience includes supporting SMEs at one of the UK’s largest early SEO agencies, optimising a directory website containing more than 500,000 pages, leading SEO work for a large international hotel website and managing marketing within a video game studio.
I established SGB Marketing to offer businesses direct access to experienced, independent support. Today, I plan and deliver SEO, paid search, content and AI visibility work, supported by analytics, technical diagnosis and practical website experience.
That breadth matters when a problem does not fit neatly into one marketing channel. I can examine how search demand, content, advertising, measurement, website implementation and the customer journey are working together – and determine where attention is most likely to produce a meaningful commercial result.
Sector experience grounded in real client work
My main sector focus reflects the areas where I have developed substantial, practical experience and where effective search and digital marketing can make a measurable commercial difference.
I have supported healthcare clinics with SEO, Google Ads, content and appointment-generation strategy through a long-term relationship spanning several years. Within financial services, my experience includes accountancy firms, pension providers, investment businesses and business lenders, where accuracy, trust and longer decision-making journeys are especially important.
I have also worked extensively with B2B and professional service firms, manufacturers, engineering businesses and other technical organisations that need to communicate complicated propositions clearly. My hospitality experience ranges from international hotel SEO to work with high-end independent and boutique hotels in the UK.
Across these sectors, I frequently work with businesses that depend on qualified enquiries, consultations or bookings rather than high volumes of low-value traffic. The individual markets differ, but the underlying requirement is often similar: understand what potential customers need, reach them at the right stage of their decision and make the next step as clear as possible.
I also bring experience from ecommerce, charities, technology businesses and long-term agency partnerships, including embedded and white-label digital marketing support.
What clients value in working with me
I bring together search experience, technical understanding and commercial judgement to determine what is preventing progress and where your marketing investment is most likely to produce value. Many clients turn to me after previous marketing services have fallen short and value my breadth of skills and experience, transparency and clear direction.
Finding the real problem
I am particularly good at diagnosing problems where the obvious explanation does not fit the evidence. A fall in enquiries is not always caused by lost traffic, just as strong rankings do not necessarily indicate commercial success. I examine the wider picture, test competing explanations and focus on the issue most likely to be preventing progress.
Connecting detail with commercial goals
I combine technical understanding with practical marketing judgement. That means looking beyond rankings, clicks or isolated campaign metrics to consider the enquiries, bookings and sales the activity is intended to produce. I can make sense of complicated information, identify what is commercially important and turn it into a manageable set of priorities.
Clear advice and flexible support
Clients value straightforward communication, transparency and clear direction - particularly when previous marketing support has fallen short. I explain what I have found, why it matters and what should happen next without hiding behind unnecessary jargon or process. I can lead the work independently, collaborate with an internal team or provide specialist support behind an agency relationship.
Let's talk about your business
If you need experienced, independent support with SEO, Google Ads, content or AI visibility, tell me about your objectives and where your current marketing is falling short. I’ll review the details and get back to you to discuss whether I can help.
