A short story on why hiring an experienced SEO consultant is important

Not long ago, I was approached by a design agency with what they described as an SEO emergency. Following the launch of a new website for one of their clients, several important Google rankings had dropped and organic traffic had started to decline. They asked if I could investigate the issue and identify what had gone wrong.

The website was a large, established business with a long history of generating significant organic search traffic. One of the challenges with SEO is that enterprise and large website SEO can be very different from SEO for smaller businesses. Technical considerations, website architecture, legacy optimisation work and external factors often play a much larger role.

After carrying out a technical SEO review, I identified several areas for improvement, including a number of technical issues that were worth addressing. While these were not responsible for the ranking decline, the investigation uncovered the real cause of the problem.

The website had previously benefited from a complex network of related websites that supported its search visibility and authority. The client had parted ways with their previous SEO consultant several years earlier, and over time knowledge of the setup had been lost. During the website redesign, the agency had not been made aware of the network and, understandably, had no reason to look for it. As a result, key SEO assets and relationships were unintentionally disrupted during the migration.

This project highlighted an important lesson. Successful SEO is often built over many years and involves far more than keywords and content. Technical SEO, website migrations, search authority, historical optimisation work and organisational knowledge can all have a significant impact on search performance. Without a clear understanding of how these elements work together, valuable SEO equity can easily be lost.

How much do you charge for SEO?

It depends entirely on the size and scope of your site and how much work there is likely to be.
 
When we first chat, I’ll give you an idea of how many days work is involved along with my day rate. We can agree on how and when this will be delivered – either as a one-off project, or as ongoing work a few days a month. 

How long does it take to get results with SEO?

Unfortunately that’s difficult to give a specific answer to.
 
Some minor SEO changes on websites can be reflected in live search results almost immediately, and new content published can also be indexed and ranking within a few days. However, there are situations where this can take longer.
 
For more complex website changes, and for larger websites, it can take long to realise results as it takes search engines longer to index all content.

How do you measure SEO results?

There are various ways we can track the performance of SEO.
 
Monitoring keyword rankings is a good way to benchmark performance as this gives us an indication of movement on a day to day basis. We can also use free tools such as Google Search Console to get some insights into performance.
 
Ultimately though, enquiries and sales are the goal of marketing and how we would benchmark performance. For some businesses this is relatively simple and can be measured via Google Analytics. For others, it’s more complex (for example if it takes weeks or months from the point of enquiry to a sale occurring). In these cases we’d have to look at other solutions to measure performance – either a technical solution or regular meetings to exchange feedback.

How do I know which SEO services my business will need?

I don’t have a one size fits all package so you’re not going to get stuff bundled into the cost that you don’t need.
