Freelance PPC Consultant

Scott Boyd - Expert PPC Consultant with over 20 years' experience

Based in Edinburgh, I’ve specialised in search engine marketing and paid search since 2002. During this time, I’ve worked clients and agencies across Scotland and the UK helping them launch and optimise their PPC campaigns and grow their businesses.

Freelance PPC expertise for your company

PPC is a fantastic way to grow your business as it’s measurable and you can exercise a high degree of control over the spend and performance of the campaigns.

Unfortunately for smaller businesses, it’s not cost-effective to hire someone full time to work on your PPC campaigns internally, so many businesses hire PPC freelancers to manage their campaigns month to month.

This gives you the assurance that your PPC campaigns are being managed to a high standard, at a cost that still delivers a great ROI.

Why it's important to understand the value of your freelance consultants

I was approached by a company (via their design agency) to help with a Google Merchant Center emergency – their account had been suspended, which in turn had meant their Google Shopping Ads campaigns weren’t running, which was the main source of their revenue.

What I uncovered was perhaps one of the most extreme examples of poor client-freelancer relationships I’ve ever seen.

The client had, a year earlier, decided that their PPC freelancer wasn’t worth the cost and he could manage the campaigns himself, so he let the freelancer go.

But, he didn’t fully understand the complex campaign structure that the freelancer had setup (a combination of Performance Max and Shopping Campaigns), and had ignored the warnings from Google Merchant Center regarding data quality, which resulted in the suspension – prices and delivery costs (which were based on a complex combination of dozens of delivery options) were wrong.

As I investigated further, more problems cropped up. I discovered that the XML product feed that had been sending data to Merchant Center was an old version and never updated product data (a legacy not from the previous freelancer, but an agency years before him) – neither the client, the recent freelancer or the current agency had noticed this issue persisting for years!

Worse still, this all coincided with the deadline for Google Analytics retiring Universal Analytics – something else the client hadn’t actioned. And, to compound the problem, when I reviewed the old Google Analytics data and compared it to actual sales data, it turns out the old setup had been misreporting conversions for years (showing 40-60% less sales data).

As a consquence of believing he could do it himself, the client ended up losing months of revenue, had no reliable legacy data to base decisions on, hadn’t retained expertise within his organisation to fix these problems and basically had to start a lot of things again from scratch.

It’s possibly one of the most extreme “own goals” I’ve seen a business make – entirely down to poor decisions made by a single individual. It hampered growth for years, lost valuable expertise and data and cost months of revenue as the many problems that were hidden became apparent and had to be resolved.

Ongoing management of PPC campaigns is critical as there are many problems that crop up that need to be resolved, and as more data comes in, the campaigns can be optimised for better performance.

Optimising your product feeds for Google Shopping and Google Ads campaigns is a critical element of ecommerce PPC - it ensures your products are being displayed for relevant terms in free and paid listings.

Landing Page Optimisation

About my PPC services

Frequently asked questions

How much do you charge for PPC?

It depends on how much you plan to spend on your PPC campaigns (which in turn will inform the size and scope of the campaigns).

I charge by the day and we would agree in advance how many days per month of my time you would need. For smaller businesses or campaigns, that might simply be a day or two per month. For larger projects where you might want to roll out new campaigns regularly, or for ecommerce campaigns, it may be more.

How long does it take to get results with PPC?

It’s usually pretty quick – in most cases you’ll start to see the traffic coming to your website within 24 hours (depending on when we put the PPC campaigns live, etc.).

If we’re looking at Merchant Center or Shopping campaigns setup, that can take a bit longer as there are various parts of the process that need to be approved by Google as we go along.

Does my business retain owership of the PPC account?

Yes, absolutely. Your business owns your ad account.

I’ve encountered some rare instances where agencies retain control of ad accounts, which is not a practice I agree with.

If we’re setting up a new ad account, I’ll talk you through the process to setup it up and retain control of it yourself from the outset. And, if we should part company at a later date, I’ll remove my own access to it and keep you in the loop.
